Here is my awesome blog.

upgraded debian sarge to etch + 2.6 kernel

Well I’ve been running debian sarge with the 2.4 kernel for a long time and things came to ahead when I was unable to install some pecl and pear packages for some neat stuff I’m doing in PHP. I have a tendency to make drastic decisions. In geekdom upgrading your server to not only a new linux version about the kernel as well in one night is considered drastic…I think. I have lots of important stuff on there too, client files, mysql databases, lots of web content in /var/www and not to mention the countless hours, weeks worth of hours I’ve spent fine tuning it.

Well I’m glad to say everything went well. I wish I could have done a from scratch install to see the new etch installer, but that can wait for a while I guess. I initially tried just doing a kernel upgrade the lazy way using a binary version of the 2.6 kernel from aptitude, but I received dependency errors regarding libgcc and a few other packages. So after doing a bit of research and reading the release notes for etch I decided to go full force. The upgrade progress seemed to go well and the new kernel is rocking.

The only blatantly obvious issue was SSH was uninstalled during the process, but hey it could have been something I did. Luckily my config files remained intact. Now since SSH is so light and easy to configure normally this would not be a huge thing. For me it is. I connect to my server via SSH only. It’s kept in a storage area under the stairs with an old 15″ LCD, keyboard, and mouse attached to it. I was too lazy to haul it out, so I just hung out under the stairs with the spiders getting SSH back up.

Okay time for bed. Hopefully I don’t find anything missing tomorrow when I am semi-coherent.
